Interpretation

Tanner was raised in a bizarre Unarius-like UFO cult. When asked about it, he dismisses it at the ravings of his insane parents, but secretly, he's still a true believer. He dreams of making first contact, that aliens have been watching humans evolve from the beginning, and at some moment in the future will make themselves known to guide humanity to a golden new age of peace and plenty. He's a master of satellite operations and radio astronomy, and spends his free time hacking into powerful dishes and running SETI routines. He's horribly ashamed of his beliefs, not wanting to be ostracized for being a freak.
