Interpretation

Spider's father, Blazej "Butch" King, came from Czech descent and grew up working as a laborer in the Port of Baltimore, MD. He married his high-school girlfriend, Enid, when she became pregnant. The couple grew up poor, and with few prospects. Butch was not an exceptionally intelligent man, but was strong and had a high pain tolerance. It was almost natural that he ended up being a low level enforcer for the local mob. Always in trouble with the law, Butch was a brutal man in a brutal world, utterly disappointed in his lot in life. He took these frustrations out on his wife and baby son, even beating them while in a drunken rage.

Spider received little support, love or encouragement as he grew up. His father was abusive, his mother broken and weak. He did not do well in school, and was often in trouble with authorities himself for petty crimes and fighting. He learned to trust no one but himself, and his attitude towards women was badly damaged by his apparently useless mother, and how pregnancy entrapped both of them in a life of poverty.
