Interpretation
Dutch was a soldier in the California Guard since shortly after the Federal government broke up. His specialty was operating drones to take out marauders from the badlands. He's essentially a remote assassin, and has never hated his work, having clear moral certainty that the people he killed needed killing. But this clarity comes with a price; he feels set apart from the rest of the Gordian Net and polite society as a whole. Nobody likes a murderer, no matter how badly they need one. He is "the man behind blue eyes," and he has a lot of trouble connecting with people, assuming that they'll recoil in horror when they get to know who he really is.He is secretly madly in love with Lizzie Mae. He understands her and finds her naked chaotic passion and alternate frailty relatable.
